I've always loved visiting science museums and institutes, and I'm a huge advocate for keeping science accessible to the public, to encourage everyone to get involved, learn and stay curious! Whether just a short visit, or a full day, including science in your days out is really important, and making sure these places are accessible for everyone is vital. Championing science learning and research with community access allows the public to get involved in scientific issues, opening that place for discussion and involvement. Many institutes also allow professional development for those that want to take their interest even further!
I love when places weave science in naturally to engage people without noticing, something that was done really well at the Botanical Gardens in Cambridge which I visited a few weeks ago. Facts were littered about for curious minds to stumble on, as well as infographics on the floor while you're walking. There were also several stations about plants and biodiversity, with interactive elements for all kinds of learners!
We have some amazing places in the UK to learn about science and to engage in exhibitions and demonstrations, with the majority of them being free, and accessible to all ages!
Some of my favourites include:
There are loads of benefits of getting involved in science, making public institutions ever more important!
Gaining public interest in science can help:
🧬 Inspire future generations of scientists
🧬 Encourage the public to engage in science, helping understanding of current issues (i.e dispelling the inaccuracy of antivaxxers)
🧬 Help the public get involved with scientific policy and understand where funding goes
🧬 Increase understanding of how science has developed and how it plays in everyone's daily life
Science museums provide a really unique and important role in providing opportunities to engage the public in science. The help reinforce scientific concepts, and enrich learning. It's so important to keep supporting these institutions, so when you feel safe to do so, please check out what is in your area, and get exploring!
